Prayer and sadness
When you are already sad, prayer may not bring instant joy. Yet, it can be an opportunity to find peace within your soul—an oasis of calm amidst the storm, a moment of connection with God where you feel you are no longer alone. Joy is harder to access when you are depressed; that is simply the nature of depression. However, it cannot stop us from feeling the warmth of the soul that springs from a heartfelt prayer. Many saints endured periods of spiritual dryness, times when they did not feel the Grace of the Holy Spirit or His gifts—especially joy. Yet, they persevered in prayer. Spiritual joy is a gift from God, received through steadfastness in prayer. I have gone through many periods where I felt nothing during prayer and almost wanted to give up. But since prayer is my lifeline in moments of despair, I could not abandon it. I kept praying—sometimes mechanically, especially the Prayer of the Heart. Eventually, I came to experience moments of joy, even amidst the sadness that accompanied me day by day. Prayer is an anchor that grants us strength and courage; it cleanses us of passions and gives us wings. It draws us closer to Heaven and to the joy of sensing Christ’s presence within our hearts.
