The art of prayer and stillness
We are so overwhelmed by stimuli from all directions—with our attention constantly demanded by phone apps, notifications, and incoming messages—that it is no wonder we sometimes end up feeling exhausted. Yet, there is an art to withdrawing from this noise—one I try to practice from time to time. The art of doing (almost) nothing. In those moments, I simply play some religious music softly in the background and recite prayers silently. Most often, I say the Prayer of the Heart, though sometimes I offer other prayers as well. These minutes—sometimes even an hour or two—help me disconnect from the world's bustle, and I feel my soul finding rest. It is not easy at first. You feel the urge to check your phone, answer a message, or do something. That is what we are used to. But gradually, peace begins to take the place of impatience and the need to be constantly busy. I try to gather my thoughts and focus on the words of the prayer. For me, this is a calming ritual—one also recommended by the Holy Fathers: withdrawing into the inner chamber of the heart to recite the Jesus Prayer or prayers for peace. I feel stillness replacing restlessness, my soul gaining strength, and—at least for a while—I detach from the world's agitation and draw closer to God. I believe this closeness is vital for our souls, which thirst for meaning, peace, and joy.
